When God does the Astonishing

UntitledGod does that sometimes. Does the very thing you never imagined would happen. Astonishing. Times I could only look up and say thank you because what transpired could only be from Him.

I’ve had moments when I’ve been surprised by God…times when what I planned was not what He planned and my course was changed. But truly astonishing, take my breath away, full of awe and wonder moments, with the added surprise element don’t happen to me everyday. And yet, I know they’ve happened. Probably more often than I can count.

Old and New Testament moments. Like when the ram appeared when Abraham had Isaac tied to the altar. His only, longed for son, on the execution seat right before him and the ram appears.

Fishes and loaves type of astonishing moments. Like when the disciples felt doubtful at Jesus’ ability to feed thousands. And then, before their very eyes, the bread just kept on giving.

Because the BREAD always keeps on giving.

Astonishing moments, miracle moments, when our eyes can only look up and our heads can only shake in disbelief. Things unasked for. Things beyond our wildest imagination.

Things that are truly astonishing.

Like what the Lord did for us.

photo

Astonishing.

We are having another baby, Lord willing, at the end of September.

Nothing could have prepared us for this. Nothing. This was the ultimate astonishing moment. Something we didn’t dare to dream, we didn’t dare to ask for, we didn’t dare to count on.

We’ve been given abundantly more than we could ever ask or imagine.

Bread and fishes kind of astonishing.

Because the BREAD always keeps on giving.

ps…due date is September 30th, 2014. I am currently 10 weeks along and we’ve seen this cutie via ultrasound. Pray with us that this tiny miracle will be sustained and live.

{I’m happy to answer most questions so if you have one feel free to ask.}

Baby B - 36 Weeks

We’ve made it!!
DSC_0003*excuse me while I jump up and down because we’re FULL TERM!!*

This past week was jumpstarted by strawberry picking and finished off with a very relaxing weekend at home. During week 36 I actually got some things done and crossed off my list. Woo-Hoo! Lampshade and lamp purchased, hospital bag packed, name letter bought and project begun, rug pad laid down, car seat installed, curtains to be installed early this week, and bedroom is ready for Grandma when she comes.

Phew…it was quite the week!

There are of course still a list of things I would love to try and accomplish but at the same time I’m enjoying just putting my feet up and napping:) I told you all that I would let you know how the first check went this week…well my cervix is still really high so no progress noted. We’ll see what she says tomorrow! Has anyone tried evening primrose oil? I’ve been hearing good things but at the same time I’m happy to let her come when she wants!

I know I owe you all a nursery tour but the biggest problem is her room. It is so dark! It’s hard to find the right time of day to get good pictures but I’ll try this week after the curtains go up. I think that will help me think that everything looks close to being finished.

How big is baby?
She’s getting up there…she’s the size of a honeydew melon! Almost 6 pounds, though I’m thinking closer to 6.5 and around 18 inches long. Can I just say that I cannot wait for our pediatrician to track her height once she’s born and let us know her predicted height. They did that for me and I ended up just as they predicted. I keep wondering if she’ll be taller than me or a similar height. She’s *hopefully* still head down, though I’m not quite sure anymore. She has definitely not dropped because her limbs are still battling my rib cage!

How am I feeling?

Still pretty swollen and puffy…from the knee cap down. Nothing really works anymore so I’ve pretty much given up. I just keep thinking about how the end is near and how I’ve had it pretty easy this pregnancy. No morning sickness, no bed rest, heartburn has been pretty moderate, and no other major issues/problems. So all in all, I feel really good. And I’m still sleeping through the night! *knock on wood*

How am I changing?

Not many changes again this week. I’m thinking I will miss my belly once she’s here though. Most days it comes in really handy:) I’m still heading to the chiropractor twice a week and I’m anxious to see if his prediction of an easy labor will be true. I’m hoping he’s right. Also I’m clumsy as all get out…this week I happened to drop a light bulb, step on a shard of glass, and whack my head on the closet door while cleaning up the mess. It was quite comical even if I was the only one home!

Little Tidbits:

Days until Due Date: 20 !
# of scheduled Dr.’s visits left
: 3
Baby’s gestational age: 37 weeks 2 days
Total weight gain: I think right around 33 lbs. and I’m guessing from my pitted edema that includes quite a bit of water

Baby B - 31Weeks

Seriously cannot believe it’s been 31 weeks, well 28 weeks really, since we found out we were pregnant! These next 8 seem like they will be here before we know it.
DSC_1429 (2)So many changes around our house this week in preparation for Baby B. Yesterday we picked up our glider and put it in place and during the previous week, Alex installed the chandelier in her closet and most of her things have found a temporary home or have been put in their permanent place. Our shower last weekend went so well. My sister, sister in law, and mother did such a great job organizing and executing everything! Not only that but like I’ve said before this little one is a little spoiled already:) So many fun things were given and I was obviously anxious to put everything away…so for the most part I have:)

This week also marked our first labor class through Amma Maternity and our hospital tour. Both were extremely informative and helpful…I know we’re both happy we went and are both looking forward to our next couple of classes. I’m feeling the need to start packing my hospital bag even though I realize I would be doing it ridiculously early…so in lieu of packing I was hoping everyone could help me out by mentioning some must have’s to take with us!

How big is baby?

This week baby is as big as a pineapple! Other sources say she’s as heavy as 4 oranges. Either way she’s taking up all sorts of room in my tummy. The average babe at this point is just over 16 inches long and just over 3 pounds. Considering she’s measuring ahead, I’d put her at the larger end of things but who knows! She can move her head from side to side and her iris's now react to light! It’s pretty amazing to think of all the things that go on within my uterus considering we were formed from the dust of the earth.

How am I feeling?

Much better than last week I must say. Getting out in the fresh air and walking more has helped keep the swelling down and spending good amounts of time in the Word and prayer have definitely helped my attitude and frustrations. I was getting to be quite the bear and this week things have been looking up. Grateful for grace! Also I’m famished. Seriously, so hungry. I wish she would just move up and squish my stomach so I wasn’t hungry all the time. Yesterday I stocked up on lots of fruit and veggies so at least I can fill the void with things that are good for me.

How am I changing?

Definitely have noticed the difference a big ole tummy makes in getting around. I can’t squeeze through tight spaces anymore and tying my shoes is getting a bit more difficult. Oh and remember last week I mentioned my belly button seemed to be flattening. Hmm…I take that back. It’s back out in full force. Apparently I also look like I’m carrying low, which I am pretty sure I am. The lady at Bachmann’s would not believe me when I told her we were having a girl:)

Little Tidbits:

Cravings this week: Peaches. Where can I buy some?
Days until final shower: 5
Miles walked per day purposefully: about 2
Emotions celebrating Mother’s Day: Go here for more I know far too many, myself included, in which Mother’s day is bittersweet for one reason or another…Thinking of all of you yesterday and sending out hugs!

Baby B - 29 weeks

I can hardly believe we have 10 weeks left…yikes:)

This week has been great in terms of getting more things checked off the before baby list. I spent all week it felt like running errands; returning this or that, scouting stores for lamps and tables, and getting signed up for various things.
DSC_1413Highlights included a free cloth diapering intro class at Amma Parenting. Super informative…and yet we’re still on the fence. I love the idea of it and the fact that they are softer. Seriously, I would not want diaper material on my tush 24 hours a day. The times I MUST have that type of material down there, I cringe. But on the other hand, disposables are just so much more convenient. Can’t dispute that. So I’m still up in the air. This week I also signed up for my first sewing class since the 7th grade for mid-May and I’m super excited! Last but not least we picked up our crib and I participated in my first focus group through Fieldwork Minneapolis.  $75 in one hour to talk about why I would or would not watch a certain new show…not bad!

This week has been great emotionally and physically. I’ve been able to get my walks in, yesterday I spent some time weeding our front beds, and as far as our home goes, things are coming together. My father-in-law finished up the paint in the nursery over the weekend. As soon as it was dry we assembled the crib:)

How big is baby?
Baby’s doing great! She’s getting bigger and I’m still measuring about a week ahead. I can feel her moving her entire body around now and am not feeling as many kicks. The reason? She likes to stay positioned with her back and butt pushing out on my right side; so she’s kicking inward these days which makes me have to run to the bathroom far more frequently. This week she weighs as much as a squash…around 2 1/2 pounds and stretching out she’s around 15 inches. I’m so curious to know how tall they will project she will be. My dad was 6’2” and my mom 5’5” but I took after my grandmother and only rose to 5’3” while my siblings match my parents. Her head is getting bigger, she’s gaining more fat, and her brain is rapidly developing.

How am I feeling?

Still pretty good. I so don’t take my lack of symptoms for granted and am really thankful I’ve felt so good for the past 29 weeks. One new symptom that’s popped up is severe back pain. It’s in my upper back between my shoulder blades and despite every stretch in the book, I cannot relieve the pain. Heat helps a little as does a back rub but curious has anyone else experienced this and have a solution? Chiropractor? Masseuse? Emotionally with so many things crossed of the list, this week has been remarkably better. No more fretting now that I’m home and can get some things done!

How am I changing?

Well the belly is still growing! I’ve also noticed my feet swell a bit if I’ve been on them for awhile and my rings are getting quite snug. That being said not too many changes to report this week. So far so good!

Little Tidbits:

Days until baby shower #2: Only 5…can’t wait!
Things still needed for nursery: 5 (nightstand, lamp, curtains, rug, mattress)
JBF sales coming up: Two…also very excited for garage sale season…must stock up on some clothes for this sweet kiddo!
Weight gained: up 1 pound, total 20 according to my appointment this week
Days until last ultrasound: (hopefully!) 21 days

Baby B–28 Weeks

This week was fantastic! Can I just say that having two extra hands in the house makes such a difference:) My mom was here visiting for the entire week; she arrived for the conference last Friday and stayed through this past Friday. Since we’re hoping it will work for her to come right after the baby is born it was a great trial run to make sure neither party was ready to throw in the towel. Seriously, my emotional self can get a little crazy, but my mom just breezed right through it. We got so much done while she was here. We ran errands, cleaned the house, organized our storage area, made delicious food, did laundry, went for walks, and most importantly had great conversations and just enjoyed each other’s company. So thankful my husband is really okay with his mother-in-law being around for longer periods of time.

(Today’s shower with the amazing friends who threw it for us!)

Everything went so well I didn’t want her to leave and now I’m really looking forward to her coming after the baby! With all that activity this week really flew by. We’re happy to say that the nursery is finally taking shape. My father-in-law, the resident painter, is coming this next week to paint baby’s room and we’ve been told our crib will be here by early next week. Crossing my fingers that is true! We’re also having our first baby shower today! It’s amazing how just getting the closet semi-set up has changed the room…a baby is really coming:) Here’s the updated nursery plan and a picture of the progress in the closet.

OB-bbIMG_0015(this picture is really distorted b/c it was really dark in the room but it gives you a glimpse of the closet and the direction we are headed.)

The room is laid out really wonky. Not sure what they were thinking when they placed windows, doors, and closets but to make the room work we decided to take off the closet doors and trim in hopes of creating an alcove for the dresser/changing table and some bookshelves. Eventually the closet will be pink like the rest of the room, a chandelier will be placed above the changing table, and the shelves will sport baskets. The wall color will be Barely Blush by Glidden color matched to our new favorite no-voc paint, Refresh by Dutch Boy, found at Menards. It’s coming together:)

How big is baby?
She’s getting big. I can’t wait to see where I measure this next week at my next appointment because I feel like I’m getting bigger…and I hope that means she is too! She’s just over 2 pounds at this point and just under 15 inches long. Hard to imagine that if she’s like me, born at 20 inches long, she’s almost at her birth height! She can blink her eyes, her brain is continually adding billions of neurons, and she’s getting nice and chubby!

How am I feeling?

Well let me just say I’m feeling much better. With just under 11 weeks to get things in order around our house I know I can do it. Much thanks to my momma who helped me get a great jump start. After the conference I was burnt out and very emotional. After some much needed rest and the help of my mom, things are coming together and I’m excited to get back into my normal routine. At the end of the day I know that none of the other things matter, but this momma likes a little bit of organization. Believe me, you do NOT want to see the state of my office at the moment:)

How am I changing?

Not many changes this week other than the same familiar things like tying my shoes are getting more challenging. Good thing it’s sandal season and I can live in flip flops. I’ve also been noticing that I do need to stop and rest throughout the day. Sounds funny, but around 2 or 3pm, I’m exhausted. So I’ve been trying to build in some time to read or just rest and it’s been really good so far!

Little Tidbits:

Weight gained: up another pound for a total of 19
Favorite organization item: Skubb Storage boxes from Ikea…These are perfect in baby’s dresser though I think I want them everywhere!
Baby Shower #2: Wisconsin in 13 days!
Needs: a very narrow trash can for the baby’s room
Classes this week: I’m taking an informational class on cloth diapering…we’re on the fence

Now questions for you veteran mommies…

1. Diapers: favorite brands/types; we’re on the fence with cloth…personally I really kind of like disposable; the smell, the whole bit reminds me of my childhood and playing with dolls. That being said, they’re expensive. Thoughts?

2.  Now that I have the time what books would you recommend I read before the baby gets here?

Baby B - 25 Weeks

We returned home during week 25 and so this week has been all about re-adjusting to reality! No more sunshine and beaches; instead days are filled with work and laundry:) In terms of baby girl, this week was also filled with fun purchases and brainstorming our new nursery design. We bought our crib! So that is one thing off the list and good thing we finally made the purchase because it could take as long as 10 weeks to get here. Hopefully she doesn’t come a day early!

Also the big pink pouf came in the mail and I love it! We got a great deal on it since I was able to use my work discount and it will add a great pop of color in the now more neutral setting. We hope to use it often when baby is playing on the rug and us older ones would like a place to perch while interacting. We plan to place it in the book corner along with wall shelves filled with books!

DSC_1373 (3)
How big is baby?

Baby is growing right along. This week she is approximately 13.5 inches long and weighs in between 1.5 and 2 pounds. I had a feeling she had a growth spurt because I definitely did! She is busy adding weight and hair and can now differentiate between which was is up and down. Smart girl!
How am I feeling?

Very excited to have her here with us. Every week I feel like I say the same things; I’m growing more tired and my back hurts. While these things are true I am not complaining! I’m loving being pregnant, feeling her move all about. I know that these things are only momentary and I’m very fortunate to have had a very easy pregnancy without any sickness and I can still sleep through the night, only getting up once! That is cause for celebration:)

There are some slight, normal fears of what life will look like on the other side and we’re trying to take the time now to keep our marriage our number one priority after the Lord. We’re very thankful for the 5 years of marriage under our belts before baby! In the next few weeks as life slows down a bit we hope to crack open all of our books regarding baby. We’re very open and know she may never fit the mold of the books, but it’s always good to be a little more educated!

How am I changing?

Physical changes have been fewer and fewer…unless you count a growing belly:) But a few changes have included my belly button protruding further out and the linea negra has showed up. It’s also getting harder to do normal things like put on socks. I know this will only get harder but I was a little surprised how quickly it caught up with me!

Little Tidbits:

Weight gain: after two weeks of not checking, I’m up 2 pounds TOTAL: 15
Birds chirping: indefinite, spring is on it’s way!
Trips back to WI planned: 3
Days until work is done: 11

Days until due date: 97!!
Names being considered: I have a favorite, Alex has yet to share his:)

Baby B -19 Weeks

Week 19 update means one thing; we’ve hit the mid-point of pregnancy. (Remember, I write these on the back end, so today I turn 20 weeks!) Best part of week 19 was right in the middle. Level 2 anatomy scan and seeing the pictures of our little one unfold in front of us. What met us on the screen was one happy little GIRL. I’m still over the moon knowing this little one is a girl!

2012-02-15_004(ultrasound pics of baby girl at 12 weeks (left) and 9 weeks (right))

Our friend Gina did an amazing photo shoot following the ultrasound and I wouldn’t change that for anything. We know what she captured is incredibly special and we are really grateful for her! It was so much fun to open our eyes and see pink. I’m pretty sure we both had a hunch it was a girl but now that it’s official, it’s fantastic! With just one little niece on my side, my family was over the moon.  In fact the first day we were talking with our little one and one of us said: “Silly little girl…” which caused us both to burst into laughter. We happen to love Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and ever since we saw it, one line stuck with us. Here’s the clip; start at 2:50:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory–Wonka’s Welcome

Other fun things this week, daddy came home from his trip and we were so excited to see him. It’s so much better having Alex home instead of gone; we missed him! And I definitely started shopping for this little one…first purchase, a little pink snowsuit for this next winter. It’s so cute!

Regarding clothing, I need some opinions from the momma’s…I do not expect to have a baby under 7 pounds…should I even buy things in size newborn? Diapers in size newborn or size 1? Hmm. On to the good stuff…

How big is baby?

This week we learned that baby girl is spanning my abdomen. Head on the right, legs on the left, facing up at me and stretched out completely. My source says that she is as big as a mango, about 8 1/2 ounces and 6 inches, head to bottom. She can hear our voice, her arms and legs are now in proportion with her body, and the waxy coating called vernix is starting to cover her body.  She’s definitely found her rhythm and I can now see small movements on my belly as she punches her arms and kicks her legs. This is what she looked like by ultrasound:

BROGLE_1
and in 3d (stubbornly hiding her face):

BROGLE_10
How am I feeling?

This week I felt great. Not only was it so nice to have Alex back home but while he was gone I got into a great groove at the gym. Yesterday I spent my first day in the pool and it felt fantastic. Hoping baby girl ends up loving the water as much as her parent’s do! Finding out it was a girl ushered in its own emotions; will she like me, I hope she doesn’t make all the same mistakes, now I have to tell her about the birds and the bees. These were some of the thoughts that overtook my brain and then I remembered, one day at a time for today’s trouble is enough and He is going before me and will equip me with all I need. Helpful to remember we’re not alone!

How am I changing?

I’m pretty sure this was the week I popped. Nothing but maternity bottoms fit at this point and I’ve definitely heard my first few comments from strangers on the bump. I love it! Also I’m up 2 pounds this week so I’m sure baby girl just went through a growth spurt:) Yay for a growing girl!

Little Tidbits:
Girl things bought:   2
Nursery planned:   Yes! Now to start buying:)
Names under consideration:   At least 10…yikes! We’re stumped.
Cravings:   Fruit. Cannot wait for watermelon to be in season
Weight gained:  2 pounds this week for a total of 8

The Writing on the Wall

Overcast and dreary was the weather the day we found out just who you were. We knew you were special, created specifically for us, for this season, for this point in life. But we didn’t know if you were a boy or a girl.

The woman with the wand, guided the ultrasound and images of you took over the screen. Happy baby. Moving all about. Shy and stubborn all in one. We snuck a peek at your beautiful face before you huddled in safe, arm crooked near your face. And that is how you stayed as we watched the miracle of you unfold in front of us. Fingers, toes, heart beating quick. Images that show the Creator full force. He knit you together, perfectly.

”He loves us, oh how He loves us, oh how He loves us…”

His goodness towards your daddy and I is immeasurable. To think we get you, sweet baby, undoes us completely. And He loves you, oh how He does.

And once we were home, we giggled in anticipation. Then with eyes concealed, paint hit the wall, leaving the mark unveiling more of who you were. The camera clicked quietly as we opened our eyes to see beautiful you.

Ballet slippers, the color we chose, the faintest shade of pink, met our eyes and we couldn’t hold our excitement in.

Sweet baby girl, you are ours, and we cannot wait to meet you!

What Old Wives Would Say

Boy or girl?

Let’s consult the professionals…

Wives Tale                                                    Answer        B/G
Heart rate 140+ girl/under 140 boy?            HR: 155       GIRL

Baby B–17 Weeks

DSC_1376
Seems like yesterday that I was 4 weeks, having just seen the two pink lines. Crazy to think we are so close to nearing the halfway point…already! This week was ushered in by a cold. A nasty, yucky, cold that lasted 7 days before I waved my white flag and gave in to antibiotics. Best decision I made all week! Turns out my cold turned into a sinus infection. At least I gave it a valiant effort but on the flip side, I’m so thankful that I’m finally starting to feel better.

So needless to say, exciting moments this week were few and far between. Aside from resting as much as possible and working a little, other highlights included getting together with girlfriends and going to the movies with my hubby. Iron Lady was really good in case anyone is looking for a movie suggestion:) She was one tough woman!

How big is baby?

Baby is growing quickly…now as big as a turnip. Other suggestions for size include a baked potato and an onion. Baby made a huge jump in weight from 2.8 ounces to 5! In inches, baby measures around 5 and in a couple of weeks that measurement moves from crown to rump over to crown to foot. Can’t wait for that change! In other news this babe’s little body is getting stronger as its skeleton moves from cartilage to bone. Grow baby grow!

How am I feeling?

Now that I am on medication I’m feeling so much better! Other than being sick, I did make it to the Y twice this week, today included and I’m excited to get back in the pool to swim. Not sure I’m that excited to put my suit on, but swimming will feel wonderful I’m sure. I’ve enjoyed reading this book on Pregnancy and Exercise on my Nook…it was loaned from the library. Post coming on how much I love my Nook this week! I also received a fun gift from my dad and step-mom in the mail. Among some other great things, they sent over a body pillow…I never would have bought it for myself, but let me say, it’s amazing! As a back or stomach sleeper, I’ve been trying to switch to my side and this pillow has made that switch even easier!

How am I changing?

Much of the same this week…although I’m definitely noticing more of a pronounced bump. These past few weeks I could suck in the top part of my stomach and was able to better see the bump. This week sucking in is basically a joke. I can’t. Also my belly button is slowly beginning to flatten. At this point my prior innie is now almost flat and I’ve definitely been feeling some tenderness there. Not sure if it’s because I had pierced it in college and it’s the scar tissue that is sore or if this is normal for pregnancy.

Little Tidbits:

Pounds gained:   Held steady at 5
Maternity pants hemmed:   3…must learn how to do this myself!
Baby things bought:   Diapers! There was a great sale…
Days until BIG ultrasound:   11 :)
Gender thoughts:   I’m thinking girl…but have had friends say boy based on how I am carrying!

*By the way…there’s a poll on the right side of the blog if you want to place your vote on gender…will it be a boy or a girl :) *

Baby B–16 Weeks

DSC_1367
(please excuse my outfit & duck footed stance)

This week started off with a bang! My mom came over for a visit and to celebrate Alex’s birthday. We celebrated with dinner out and a little shopping of course:) It was a great help having 2 extra hands around when preparing for the party; we invited our friends over for the play-offs in celebration of Alex. From rolling pepperoni rolls to helping me shop, our effort was not in vain…food was gobbled up!

During the festivities, mom headed home and Alex and I started out the week anticipating excitement of our own. This was the week we headed back in to the Dr. for our 16 week check. Everything went great; I’m measuring right where I am supposed to, she’s not worried at all about my slow weight gain, and the babe…well it’s little heartbeat was beating away, this time around 155. This is normal for the heart rate to slow a bit; started at 150, rose to 167, lowered to 164, and now down to 155. That heartbeat is not making the old wives’ tale easier to figure out! Could be a girl or a boy and we can’t wait until 17 more days pass and we find out the gender! Don’t worry, we’re not going to keep it a secret!

We also chatted pediatricians. Alex and I are pretty certain we do not want a mega practice. I’ll be home with the babe so extended hours, etc. are not a huge concern. Funny thing about this conversation with our amazing OB, of all the small practices, she highly recommended the one where all 3 of my nanny kids went. We’re pretty sure that’s where we are headed and I couldn’t be more happy; not only am I familiar with the doctors and the practice, but it’s not too far away!

Other highlights this week: we endured our first round of couch shopping, not for the faint of heart, installed a humidifier on our furnace, put up a second blind in our bedroom, and brainstormed our future home layout. Quite the week!

How big is baby?

This week baby is as long as an avocado! Makes me want guacamole:) My favorite baby book states that baby is “about 2.8 ounces and 4 1/2 inches from crown to rump.” It also says the babe is just busy playing around in there and his/her bones are starting to harden. Crazy to think the babe could fit in the palm of our hands!

How am I feeling?

All week I’ve been feeling great; that is until yesterday. I came down with quite the cold and I am employing all my mother’s old tricks; hot water with honey and lemon, using my NeilMed sinus bottle, making chicken soup, and resting. I miss the ability to pop dayquil and nyquil like it’s my job but I’m hoping this little bug will just pass us by as quick as it came on.

Other than the sickness, I feel like my old self. If I didn’t have a bump, I would be surprised I am expecting. In fact yesterday I joined the Y and told Alex that I really need to slowly start exercising again because I feel like I could just join right into Zumba and BodyPump without wavering. I heard I better take advantage of the second trimester, so I’m hoping to get a lot done around the house before baby arrives!

How am I changing?

There’s definitely more of a clear bump on my belly and I’m sure as the days pass that will only become more evident. My hands are always touching it; my reasoning, if I look like I’m touching my belly maybe people will guess I’m pregnant instead of getting chubby! I’ve also noticed that my hips have definitely spread. I'm sure I’m being naïve, but I really hope they shrink back a bit after baby because I have a whole closet of my favorite jeans that I hope button again. That would be an expensive shopping trip to replace them. Either way, this baby will be worth all the changes even if it means momma goes shopping:) Last change, my face is getting a little fuller. I don’t notice it that much because in high school I weighed up to 18 pounds more than I did pre-pregnancy, but people who didn’t know me then can see the changes!

Also this past week I FELT THE BABY MOVE! I know it’s early but I’ve definitely been feeling something I’ve never before felt and I’m pretty certain it’s the babe. Most amazing feeling:)

Little Tidbits:

Weight gained: 5 pounds
Vacations booked: 1; back to FL in late March to visit my in-law’s
Days until the BIG ultrasound: 17
Couches under debate: 2
On my mind: Registering:) Can’t wait!

Baby B–15 weeks

It’s that time again! Posting weekly updates definitely helps the weeks go faster; I can hardly believe it’s time to update. Week 15 flew by. Ever since we’ve been back from vacation I have had something going on everyday and almost every night. Makes for a busy mommy to be! Hoping this week things begin to slow down a bit.

During this week, baby helped me take down our Christmas tree, plan the women’s conference, celebrate books and friends at book club, and organize the house as a whole. Needless to say, we’re both a little tired! To cap the week off, it’s been a birthday week in our house and we’ve been celebrating Daddy. We celebrate the birthday person all week long…baby has all sorts of fun to look forward too!

How big is baby?

Baby is as long as an apple! This week Baby B is flexing his/her facial muscles, learning to smile and frown. Baby can sense light, is wiggling all around, and his/her lungs are developing further. Sounds like it’s just as busy inside as we are on the outside!

How am I feeling?
This week I have really noticed the fatigue is gone. There is no way that I could have accomplished as much as I did this week in the first trimester. Looks like that ended just in time. Other than busy I’ve been feeling round ligament pain often. The twinges and stretching going on inside are signs of growth, so that is a great thing. I’m really looking forward to when I can feel the babe moving around inside…hope that starts happening this next week! One other sidenote that surprises me: my sweet tooth is officially gone. I went from being someone who needed something sweet after every meal to a “take it or leave it” kinda gal. Very surprising!

How am I changing?

Things are remaining steady on this front. Although sometimes I’m a little nervous about not having gained too much weight yet, I’ve been reminded by my mother that slow gain is better than fast gain. I’m sure in a few weeks I may be humming a different tune; one pound a week is average for the 2nd trimester. I’ve also found myself this week obsessed with my little bump; often you will find my hands resting upon the bump. Obviously this makes me very happy:)

Little Tidbits:

Pediatricians researched: 5-10
Weight gained: Holding steady between 3 and 4
Fruit of the week: Blueberries and strawberries
Snack of choice: Yogurt
Birthday meals eaten: 4

Baby B–14 Weeks

This week baby spent half the week in beautiful sunshine and 80 degree weather and the other half back at home, in the teens. Welcome to our life little one! You will soon learn the beauty of four seasons and why your parents love to travel in the winter to warm locations:) We can’t wait until next year when you are here.

DSC_1372
This past week Alex and I enjoyed our last few days in Florida. The weather warmed up and it felt amazing to take in the sunshine. I spent my days between 3 lounge chairs at the pool, rotating from sun to shade, while lathering on my 55 sunscreen. I think this might be the first time laying out did not create an amazing tan! Other than enjoying the sun, we ate amazing food and shopped around a bit.  Best deal of the vacation: my mom was here and we hit up a maternity consignment shop. I found a pair of Citizens for Humanity maternity jeans (aka retailing $180) for $16.99.  I obviously scooped them up! Plus we found a few cute things for the babe!

This week I started my research on pediatricians and hospitals for delivery. Who knew those decisions needed to be thought about already…While I’ll share some of our views on things here, I do hope that everyone will be supportive knowing we have researched it, prayed over it, and come to our own conclusions. I feel childbirth, parenting, and pregnancy are all highly personal areas of life and everyone should make their decisions based on what works best for them and their family. People making their opinion as law really makes me sad. That being said, we’ve been open and honest and will continue to be!

How big is baby?

He/she is the length of a lemon this week and growing every day. I cannot wait until our 16 week appt. to hear that little heart beating away…an amazing sound! Inside he/she is moving, hiccupping, yawning, and wiggling. So exciting.

How am I feeling?

I’ve been feeling great. I can tell I have officially switched from first to second trimesters. In the first all I wanted was junk food; I never eat fast food and I probably ate more in my first tri than I had the whole year combined. So glad that is over. The second tri ushered in a need for greens, something that made me gag before, and fruit. Our dinners have definitely been well planned and are healthier to boot. Next week I hope to rejoin the YMCA and I’m really looking forward to swimming and walking. If things feel good I may even venture out and try my favorite classes again. The fatigue is slowly leaving and I’ve found myself able to keep my eyes open and need less rest during the day which has been really helpful.

How am I changing?

Well I’m still pretty certain I have a bump. What I realized the other night was if I suck in my upper abs the little bump is far more defined. It’s actually pretty cute knowing someone’s kicking away in there!  Also many of the aches and soreness of the first trimester have faded. One new symptom: itchiness. My stomach is so itchy from my skin stretching. Body butter is my friend…thank you Palmers! I know that’s really common so it feels good to know things are right on track.

Little Tidbits:

Flights flown: 1
Pat downs received: 1 (we requested them in lieu of the body scanners)
Maternity purchases made:  6 (work bottoms, dress, and a couple of shirts)
Hospitals considered: 2
Books read on vacation: 3 (one of the most intriguing: “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua)
Weight Gained: 1 pound, for a total of 3

Baby B–13 Weeks

Baby’s been on an adventure!  After last week’s ER little fiasco, I think we all needed a little R&R.  So we three headed to Florida! We had this trip planned for a couple of months and we were really excited to get out of town.  No worries that we landed in Florida to record lows, we knew it would warm up and warm up it did.  Other than our first couple of days, the weather has been in the mid-70’s and this weekend we’ll hit close to 80.  Sunshine feels amazing!  Between the IMAX, Chick-fil-A, the pool, shopping, relaxing and golf, I’m positive the babe is enjoying this vacation just as much as we are.  Today we’ll see Grandma Bonnie (Andrea’s mom) who happens to be here as well and then we’ll be heading back down to Florida in March to say hi to Nana and Papa Brogle.  Vacations are grand!

How big is baby?

As big as a peach!  So last week I had it off a bit because I’ve been doing my recaps at the end of the week.  I was reading about week 13 when I was writing week 12.  Confusing!  So this week, babe is a peach.  Highlights from this week:  baby has fingerprints, is 3” long, and his/her vocal cords and teeth are forming.

How am I feeling?

I’m still feeling great.  I was a little nervous for flying as there was a slight chance the SCH could make an appearance again, but thankfully it didn’t.  The flight went well, I’m feeling great, and I’m so ready for the second trimester.  Only symptom still plaguing me is fatigue.  I can’t wait for that one to go away!  That being said, I have been walking and trying to ease into exercise again.

How am I changing?

Still about the same but one major thing I noticed over the course of this week is that it’s happened.  Most of my pants no longer button.  The belly band and my few maternity bottoms have become my best friend.  I see so many mom’s that can still wear their regular pants, but I must be carrying low, b/c the pooch is out.  It’s been kind of fun though b/c I’m pretty sure people can start to tell I’m pregnant instead of overweight.

Little Tidbits:

Flights flown: 1
Watermelons eaten: almost 1, umm all by myself
Books read: 2 and in the middle of 3
Days of Exercise: 1, other than walking
Pounds gained: no idea, scales don’t belong on vacation:)

Baby B–12 weeks

My oh my, week 12 was full of fun.  Not only did the babe get to celebrate Christmas but it was an eventful week as well!  We had a wonderful Christmas, very low key but filled with family fun.  We hosted this year and though I worked the day before and the day after, we pulled everything off and I still had time to rest.  Fun as it is to be home for Christmas, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss being home with my family.  Maybe next year!

Christmas this year, as well as we had things planned, seemed rushed and a little off.  We’re chalking it up to the fact that we moved into our house just a few weeks before.  Even so, our tree went up and decorations went out, so at least everything looked incredibly festive.  If you are interested how I finally decided to display our cards…I have to say, the idea I came up with was a keeper.  I bought a wood ring garland a couple of months ago from West Elm for $2.99 on clearance.  At this point, I wish I would have thought to buy more.  But in the end, when tacked on the wall, it became the perfect, simple, rustic card display.  I’m so loving it and I’m sure it will be the last thing I will want to take down.  I love seeing our family and friends all up on the wall!

Even with the craziness of Christmas, I have to say things are going great.  Baby is growing strong and mama is starting to show.  I really just look like I ate too many cookies, but Alex and I know, this belly is bigger than normal and I love it!  Little baby belly:)

How big is baby?

This week the charts report that baby is as big as a plum or a peach.  Either way, these are some of my favorite fruits!  Seems so big after starting out as a grain of sand.  We don’t get to see the babe for another 7 weeks but I can hold out since we’ll be finding out the gender at that appointment.  I can’t wait to see whether this little bee is a boy or a girl!  Either way we’ll be ecstatic…although if it’s a girl it’s going to be operation find a name at our house!

How am I feeling?
I’m feeling great.  Still exhausted but really fortunate that I haven’t been sick at all.  One thing I’ve noticed is that I definitely have cravings and aversions.  One day I’ll love one thing and hate it the next.  The only things that never change are milk, peanut butter, salt and vinegar chips, oranges, and anything Asian, especially pad thai.  Not sure they are the healthiest but I’ll take it.  Things that have been off limits, some vegetables, anything sweet, and eggs.

In other news, this past week we had our first scary moment that resulted in a trip to the ER.  After a great night out with friends to dinner, I found myself unable to void my bladder.  I tried multiple times over the course of 30 minutes, but the more time that passed, the more pain I felt.  I finally decided that a trip to the ER was in order.  Imagine having drank 4 large glasses of water at dinner and then being unable to go.  I think thus far in my life this was the worst pain I have ever felt.  The nurses at the Emergency Room took pity on me and rushed me back.  After putting a catheter in and relieving the pain, they let me know that I had severely over distended my bladder.  Afterwards the Dr. was kind enough to do an ultrasound and the babe was moving all around, looking happy…Alex thinks the babe was so happy that my bladder was no longer impeding on its home!  With the Dr. stumped, I went home with  a cath and directions to call my Dr. the next day.  So New Year’s Eve morn we spent our day at Abbott with my OB, who just happened to be on call.  Also stumped, my rules to follow upon being released were to drink less water and go more often.  Apparently with a big ol’ uterus atop your bladder, the bladder can only grow so big.  So my over distended bladder freaked and was unable to do its job due to the amount of fluid in there.  Let me just say, lesson learned.  Not only was this painful but it was comical as well.  In fact my mom chuckled, wondering what other odd things were going to go wrong.  Leave it to me.

How am I changing?

I’m definitely noticing a little bit more bump these days which doesn’t surprise me at all given that I’m pretty short and my torso is bordering short as well.  I’ve worn my maternity jeans a couple of days and I’m in love.  I think every pair of pants should have an elastic waist!  I’ve also noticed I’m more cold than normal, maybe due to increased blood flow to the baby?  My nails are definitely stronger and growing longer and my hair, oh my, can I keep my hair after the baby comes?  I know I can’t, but it’s so soft and definitely a little fuller.  I love it!

Little Tidbits:
Weight gain:  Holding steady at 2 pounds
Ornaments bought:  4
Baby gifts received:  A few of the gifts: some bibs, some ornaments, and a teddy bear.  Baby’s spoiled already!
Nursery Schemes dreamt:  2 and pretty certain they are to stay
Bags packed:  0 and vacation commences in T-2 days!

Baby B…8 Weeks

One more week has passed and that means Baby Brogle is 6 weeks old today!  Things have been a little crazy around here.  Hitting 8 weeks brought all sorts of changes to our lives.  We were set to close on our house in a week but the house under appraised.  Luckily the seller agreed to sell us the house for $15,000 less than we had agreed upon which was a huge blessing, but it took them awhile to agree.  So we’re praying we can still close on time.  Boxes have filled our living room and we’re now officially living on essentials!  After last weeks little scare, it’s good to know things are getting in order.  Also, I celebrated my birthday!

How big is baby?
This week baby is as big as a raspberry!  Such a big jump.  Blueberry to raspberry seems like quite the growth spurt to me!  Although I can’t tell any difference, we definitely saw a difference between our 6 and 7 week ultrasounds, so we can only imagine what has happened from 7-8 weeks.

How am I feeling?
I’m still feeling great though I have definitely slowed down.  After our little scare I’ve been told to rest as much as possible and am currently on pelvic rest.  Work has been really gracious and has limited my hours quite a bit which has been nice.  So if I’m not working, which is only once a week, you will find me on the couch!
How am I changing?
Somehow I’ve been blessed with a belly that distends easily.  Not sure what is really the cause, but paired with the hematoma, I’m now wearing a belly band with most of my pants.  Mainly because the Doctor does not want more pressure on my belly than necessary but also because to be honest, it’s just more comfortable.  Though I do have quite a few pairs of jeans that still fit just perfectly!
Odd little facts:

Cake eaten:  Surprisingly just one piece
Years older:  1
Favorite part of Thanksgiving:  The stuffing
Bleeding episodes:  2
Shows watched:  Far too many

Baby B - 7 weeks

Now that the news is out, I can let you in on the earlier weeks!  The road to baby, as you know, has not been an easy one, but instead a refining one.  But that to be said, we’re excited to hopefully meet this little one in less than a year.  After finding out we were expecting, we were both a little cautious and anxious as to what was ahead.  We chose to share the good news with family and a few close friends immediately, as we are so thankful for the prayers said on our baby’s behalf.

Weeks 4-7 went by quickly.  We had multiple blood draws to make sure my HCG numbers were doubling as they should.  With the encouraging news that things were progressing normally, we slowly allowed ourselves to enjoy this time with our little one.  And any time anxiety rose up in my heart, which it did on many occasions, I was thankful for the Word that fought against.

So here we are at week 7.  Our first ultrasound was scheduled for the 17th of November and we were very excited to see that little heartbeat beating away.  We went in and it was overwhelming emotion to see that little heart beat.   And since I love the “How big is baby?” emails and of course I want to document the whole 9 months, I thought it would be fun to have weekly updates.  So here we are at the beginning!

How big is baby?

This week baby is as big as a blueberry!  Considering how small it started out as, a grain of sand, I’d say it’s grown a bunch!  So amazing, especially after seeing our little one to think this little blueberry will soon be a flesh and blood baby here in the outside world.

So how am I feeling?

I’ve been feeling great!  So far so good.  No morning sickness at all, but that didn’t surprise me in the least.  If I would have been sick I would have been the only female in my family to take on that symptom!  A little tired, a little sore, but all in all, no sickness to account for.  On the other hand we’ve had a few moments of uncertainty.  I’ve had quite a bit of bleeding and headed back to the Dr. on the 21st for ultrasound #2.  We saw baby growing away, heard it’s little heart beating at 150bpm, and found the cause of the bleeding.  I have what’s called a Subchorionic Hematoma.  It’s small, less than a cm and the doctor’s are not worried in the least.  Alex and I on the other hand have been resting in Him with a few bouts of uncertain worry.  But that’s to be expected I’m sure!

How I’m changing?

Not many changes going on yet.  Just the normal aches of pregnancy.  Looking forward to the days when there is a bump!
